Newtown

Following the school shooting incident in Newtown, CT last Friday, students (members of 2nd and 3rd year councils) painted Beta Bridge to show solidarity:

HOOS for NEWTOWN

HOOS for NEWTOWN

I have been out of town recently, so I’m not sure when this went up, but it looks like they lit luminarias as well:

I wish I could have gotten good images of the bridge at night with these lit up, but I just wasn’t around.   Luckily, I got some photos sent to me from BBAD fans!  (If you ever have photos of Beta Bridge you want to share with the world, just send them my way.)

Here is an earlier photo in the daytime:

You can notice there is a difference, where the earlier photo says “CT” and later (in my photo) it doesn’t.  BBAD fan Missy notes this:  “…by midday someone had peeled off the Newtown part of the sign. The students are fixing it tonight but it was interesting nonetheless that someone would deface it.”  Indeed strange that someone would want to manipulate a message like this.

Of course this painting has been all the rage on the Twitterverse:

Lots of tweets about the Newtown painting on Beta Bridge.

One of the main photos being circulated on there is this one:

There is a minor article on NBC 29 and here is a UVA Alumni Association Facebook post about it.

Sadly, this means that both sides of the bridge are memorials now as we settle into the long stretch of winter, since the painting for Casey is still on the other side:
