I’ve been out of town for the last 5 days, so I missed a few paintings, but I found the west side has been taken over by an interesting project: “DoDeutsch” This is part of a German culture awareness event series, where they have painted this side of the bridge to emulate the East Side… [Read more…]
Brown College’s annual Hauntings Halloween tunnel/spookhouse is based on either Coal Worker’s Pneumoconiosis (“the black lung”) or the possibly the same name. Respiratory diseases are pretty scary. On the east side, yet another Alternative Spring Break ad: Later on, an unmanned table mysteriously showed up:
Last night’s painting resulted in this anti-domestic violence campaign ad: I suspected this was a repeat of something I saw last year on The Lawn, so I went over for a look: So naturally upon seeing these red flags, I did what the bridge said: I promptly called UVA police and had them all removed.… [Read more…]
Last night’s late paintings were still up this morning, including the highly colorful QSU ad on the west side: Not really sure what this part means… as in, the old-fashioned meaning of ‘gay’ — happy? On the east side, a morning shot: I will usually take a picture of the east side in the morning even… [Read more…]
Caught this one mid-paint, which is somewhat uncommon for the middle of the day (since the painting usually occurs either very late or very early — I’ve heard that despite how frequent and harmless the tradition seems, it is still technically illegal). As one could have guessed, the completed version of the above is another… [Read more…]
A partial repaint of the west side today left yesterday’s benefit ad intact. Although, I was thinking about that one: shouldn’t it be Pancakes Against Parkinson’s? Afterall, we’re not trying to support Parkinson’s Disease, but rather research to fight it, but I guess that’s implied. The other interpretation could be a Cash4Gold type model.… [Read more…]
Lots of disease awareness promotion on the bridge today. I have no idea what a “Girls in Pearls Trunk Show” is, but apparently it has something to do with breast cancer: And on the west side, a perennial favorite — Pancakes for Parkinson’s:
I’m not sure how to categorize this event, but based on the website, it looks like some kind of post-rape inspirational discussion forum. The fears and dreams actually posted on the website make for an interesting project. And on the east side, an ad for a competitive blood drive: I would be more than happy to give… [Read more…]
Ad for an event at JPJ this weekend supporting women’s healthcare at Martha Jefferson Hospital: On the west side, an invitation to meet a sorority: ——————- Update (10/24): found this group of photos on Facebook of the east side painting via Twitter.
I caught some daylight versions of last night’s late paintings for the homecoming football game today: And the east side:
What does it mean!? Birthday wishes on both sides: As has been the norm recently, lots of rain leads to runny paint: On the east side, a completion of last night’s painting: And over by the Rotunda, the trees are still inexplicably wrapped in orange (homecoming?): —————— Update: later this night I found the… [Read more…]
Ad for a Greek sporting event: Again, another RDRP: Complete with plenty of paint puddles on the sidewalk: Also today I saw all the trees on the north side of the Rotunda were wrapped in orange plastic: Possibly for homecoming weekend? And lastly, when coming home tonight I saw a fresh layer of paint going… [Read more…]
Another wet day, but an ad for homecomings stuck to the east side: On the west side, it looks like someone tried to paint over yesterday’s Reddit post, but it got washed off by the rain: And by the south pylon there, a sure sign that fall is on the way:
An ad for Reddit.com’s UVA page: And I cruised by the amphitheater to see if the Z was still painted like the U.S. flag. It was not: I wonder if the stars and stripes was a 9/11 anniversary thing. This Z does have (like many others on grounds right now) chalk devil horns and a tail, presumably… [Read more…]
No full repaint today, but a few shenanigans, such as this cryptic gang/secret society marking: With a top notch TJ head in the middle: We also have a new cartoon friend, Zpatha: Following yesterday’s altered Z, I spotted these two devilish Z’s on my way to The Corner (chalk, not paint): I suspect this is… [Read more…]
No new paint on the bridge today, but a few selections of goings-on: I just found this CavDaily article describing the tradition of writing “THX DU” and now “THX BETA” when new paintings are made. I have mentioned this practice several times before based on stories I had heard, observation of the bridge, and pure… [Read more…]
Ad for an event covering touchy subjects: rape, depression, and domestic violence. Check out Kristin’s Story here. Grammar police: that should be “present” not “presents” since the subject is plural. Side note: I was thinking, “Isn’t October already Breast Cancer Awareness Month? How is it also Domestic Violence Awareness Month?” Apparently there are no rules… [Read more…]
Another rainy day, more runny paint for a new cause: It was actually running down the street — I could see the paint color being carried off in the water trail that led to the storm drain and then yes, eventually the Chesapeake Bay watershed. That’s right, Habitat for Humanity is killing sea otters (albeit… [Read more…]
